News

  • Matsushita holds back as new M2 specs come to light - Two page article regarding Panasonic missing showing the M2 which was planned at the Tokyo E3 show, it will be shown to press early in 1997, will be going by a slightly different name and launched the first half of 1997. Spec wise, it will have 2 x Power PC602, 8meg ram and a 4x Speed CD drive (DVD will be a potential add on later - This has been slated as the reason why they have been holding back an announcement). Describing the machine, it will be top loading, have a memory card slot, and the controller will have 6 main buttons and 2 shoulder button. There will be a rotatable analogue around the left hand side directional cross. There will be a PCMCIA slot for expansion for peripherals such as modem, DVD player etc. There will be no compatibility with 3DO, mainly due to the inclusion of the quad speed drive. Software wise, Panasonic Wondertainment is developing over 10 titles internally, but work at the US office of 3DO has recently stopped, allegedly because Acclaim was working on these as M2 Arcade titles and when delays started snowballing for the M2 launch, they moved resources to the Playstation. However, Panasonic are slated to release 10 titles at launch, but the only companies with 3rd party contracts are Warp, Capcom and Konami, however, more could be introduced at the start of 1997 for a possible late spring launch. Features

  • Profile - Mark Cerny - Full page overview of the then chief of Universal Interactive Studios, it goes over Marks history, where he was the first "technical employee" for Crystal Dynamics, working on Crash n Burn, he also leant his expertise to create some M2 tools that he called a "very nice machine". He also speaks about Disruptor, how it was developed for the 3DO and M2, but was ported to the Playstation instead, he did admit it ran on the 3DO but not at 30Hz (Page 24)
