Overview

Originating in the arcades, this is a full-motion video rail shooter with real actors, produced by the makers of Mad Dog McCree.

Crime Patrol puts the player in the shoes of a police officer, who starts as a Rookie and has to work his way up to become a member of SWAT and eventually the Delta Force team. To do that, he has to complete missions, which involve taking down criminals in a variety of locations. Beginning with smaller-scale criminals (such as shoplifters), the hero will later have to face gangsters, drug lords, and eventually terrorists. For each set of missions, the player characters is being teamed up with another police officer. The gameplay is quite similar to any other of the large live-action laser-gun games found in the arcades - all the player has to do is take the gun (or the mouse in the computer version) and show those criminals who's the boss!

American Laser Games released a sequel, Crime Patrol 2: Drug Wars later that year.

Game Play

The 3DO version used a mouse or light gun to aim and shoot the villains. Reloading is done by moving the light gun outside of the screen and pressing the trigger; this is also achieved when using the mouse by directing the cursor to the bottom right-hand corner of the screen and right-clicking. The player can reload at any time and an infinite number of times. The player has three lives at their disposal. There are four levels, not counting the shooting range, which one can access to improve one's aim and reflexes. Once the player has completed a scene, on the selection screen the icon is closed off, being stamped with the words "CASE CLOSED", but if the player waits too long to choose another scene, a completed case may automatically begin.

Storyline

The player character is employed in the police force and works his way up from Rookie to Delta Force, achieved through systematically neutralizing threats which appear in various environments and scenarios. As a Rookie, the player character teams up with a somewhat boisterous policewoman, taking on burglars, armed robbers, and gang members. After getting promoted to Undercover, the player character gets a slightly overweight male partner and confronts drug smugglers and crime lords at a nightclub, a chop shop, and an airfield. Next, in SWAT, the character deals with bank robbers, meth cooks, and outlaw bikers become the enemies. Finally, in Delta Force, the player must stand up to serious threats to national security, such as a hijacked shipment of nuclear material, hijacked planes, and assassination attempts. Each part of the game is made up of three separate scenarios, with one final mission involving a plot to steal plutonium that is filmed partly in night vision.

Reception

Play Meter listed Crime Patrol to be the ninth most-popular arcade game at the time.

GamePro reviewer leveled all the same criticisms at the 3DO version except for the graphics, remarking that the 3DO version has "clean, sharp, digitized images". A reviewer for Next Generation gave the 3DO version two out of five stars, criticizing the poor acting and overt similarity to previous American Laser Games offerings. Though he admitted that the game is decently fun with a 3DO light gun, and that the video contains several entertaining stunts, he concluded, "Personally, we'd rather rent Commando again."

Magazine Reviews

Name Date Region Rating Notes
Video Games & Computer Entertainment Mar 95
90% Crime Patrol is an excellent shooter! You may remember other American Laser Games like Mad Dog McCree, Who Shot Johnny Rock? and Space Pirates. Crime Patrol is the best yet! The live action looks cool and the sound effects and music underscore the suspense. Shoot gang members, armed robbers, ski-masked villains, drug dealers, mob bosses and car thieves. Start at Rookie level, then work your way up through Undercover, Detective, SWAT team and Delta Force. The situations get tougher as you go. Watch out for innocent victims - shooting them ends the game. It's like playing COPS Interactive!
3DO Magazine Mar 95
80% The Mad Dog II formula is successfully applied to the considerably more violent scenario of modern day America. The sleazy strip joint scene is a PG classic, while gameplay is tough but fair.
FLUX Oct 94
75% Overall, Crime Patrol is a quality translation of the arcade original, and only further enhances the value of the 3DO.
GamePro Apr 95
70% If you like Lethal Enforcers or Mad Dog McCree, you'll be on the lookout for Crime Patrol. It's just a crime that nothing different was put into this game.
Game Zero Mar 96
63% Hey, this game is hillarious.... I mean really, really funny. It's the cinemas in this game that make it fun to play, and keep you coming back for more. Personally I would have to say this is my favorite ALG game for the 3DO hands down. Accuracy isn't all that bad with the gun, and I actually was able to keep a reasonable progression through the game (unlike some of the other titles like this). Graphics were pretty good, the full-screen, full-motion video is decent and pretty clean. Jumps from segment to segment flow well, and the overall production, while cheesy, is good. I'd have to say that if you're going to get a gun game, this one would have to be the one to get.
Computer and Video Games (CVG) Mar 95
55% Shelling out £50 for the game and about the same for the gun just isn't on. And with an infinite continues option you'll probably complete this in under a day. Still, it's an improvement over the likes of Mad Dog McCree thanks to its tighter disk accessing and better accuracy. But that isn't saying much is it?
Video Games Mar 95

Other Versions

Crime Patrol was also released on the CD-I, Sega CD and PC. There was a talked about Jaguar CD version in development but never released, a Dec 1996 Sega Saturn version was also slated for released but cancelled at the last minute (This could of been due to layoffs at American Laser Games).
