Overview
Digital Productions Inc was an American development house founded California Chapter-S Corporation on January 30, 1992. DPI is located in Idyllwild, California. that offered several services including:
- Multimedia Development Services (Title Development, Service Bureau, Development Support (MS Windows, Mac/Power Mac) and 3D Modelling)
- Internet Services (Content Development, Web Page Design, Unique Domain Names, Shopping Cart, CGI, PERL, HTML, "C"/"C++" Authoring, Secure Pages and Site Publicizing & Promotion)
- Inhouse Tools (Scanning (Flatbed & Film), Digital Audio (Recorded & MIDI), Digital Video Capture & Editing and 3-D modeling)
The Multimedia Machine
DPI designed a platform and subject matter independent development tool which its programmers use to produce interactive multimedia products. This tool, called The Multimedia Machine is written in the C/C++ computer language and is modular in design, with individual modules being function-specific (e.g. video, audio, image, communications, text, storage, etc). Embodied as a set of C/C++ library routines, The Multimedia Machine offers power, speed, and portability across multiple platforms.
The Multimedia Machine has been used to build DPI's first two titles: Mieko - A Story of Japanese Culture and The Whole Dog Almanac. The Multimedia Machine is now current developed for the MPC and the Macintosh platforms.
It was planned at some point that The Multimedia Machine could be packaged, marketed and licensed as a product for other multimedia developers and published.
Decline
The company seemed to stopped trading in 1999, with the founder and CEO leaving for a role at EA. The Company actually didn't get dissolved until Jan 2009. Also reviewing their website (Some captures on Archive.org - www.mmdpi.com), there are no updates on the platform from 1998-2002 when the last capture is recorded. However, with its sub site for Mieko (www.japaneseculture.com), this also had no updates, until a year after the last capture of DPI, with just a caption of "Mieko, Under Construction Coming Soon". This has lead me to believe that at some point, there was almost a reboot of Mieko. (If via Digital Productions Inc or not)
