A pair of ghosts

Overview

Ghosts, also called by fans as Spirits, Souls, Specters, Wraiths, or Wisps, are the second most common undead enemy faced by the players in Evil Night. As the name suggests, they are the souls of the damned cursed to haunt the mansion grounds and its surrounding vicinities for all eternity. They are encountered frequently in the Mansion, and later appear in both the Ruins and the Graveyard.

Appearance

Unlike zombies, Ghosts do not have a physical body and hence manifest themselves in the form of a floating specter. Their appearance is mostly composed of a skull with frills at the side, a face of sorrow, and two arms with sharp claws. In the Mansion and Graveyard, Ghosts are white in color, while yellow-orange variants are featured in the Ruins.

Gameplay

When they appear, Ghosts hover in front of players for a few seconds before charging forward with a scratch attack. They are among the weakest enemies in the game, being dispatched with only one shot. However, Ghosts are far more threatening (and annoying) when they attack among the normal zombie enemies. They themselves can also appear in large groups, especially during the lava portion of the Ruins stage and the final boss in the Graveyard. During these particular scenes, Ghosts are in greater numbers and also attack faster.

Some Ghosts also float past the screen as a harmless, "passive" enemy, yielding extra points when killed.

Trivia

  • Since the Ghosts do not have a physical body, it is unknown why the player's bullets can damage them. However, this may be due to gameplay reasons being a rail-shooter.
  • The yellow-orange variant that spawns near the lava in the Ruins stage has been called by fans as the ember ghosts.
  • In the horror satire film The Cabin in the Woods (2012), the wraith creature resembles the ghosts in Evil Night (see gallery below). It is unknown if this is a direct reference to Evil Night or purely coincidental.
